Course Description
This course is a complete beginner’s masterclass taught by Will Donovan, founder of Mathom House and Donovan Pottery. It teaches you everything you need to know to confidently master your first forms on the pottery wheel.
We cover everything from unpacking your wheel and setting up your studio space, to body ergonomics for longevity, a clear breakdown of clay types and dryness stages, plus all the core principles of wheel throwing: wedging and clay prep, centering, opening, pulling walls, shaping forms, trimming, and more.
This is one of the most comprehensive and beginner-friendly wheel throwing courses available today, created in partnership with Speedball Arts and built on over 15 years of throwing, teaching, and production pottery experience.
Why I Made This Class
When I first started learning pottery, I took an in-person class and then like so many new potters, I turned to YouTube to fill in the gaps. I was frustrated by how hard it was to find a single, complete resource that taught beginners everything they needed in one place.
In the fifteen years since those early days on the wheel, I’ve heard the exact same frustrations from countless aspiring potters. That’s why I created this course: to give beginners a clear, supportive path to the essential skills and confidence they need to succeed in this craft.
This class is the culmination of my experience as both a production potter and a ceramics educator. My hope is that you, or the person you’re gifting it to, find it thorough, enjoyable, and empowering. It’s designed to remove the doubt and insecurity from the early stages of wheel throwing so you can make your first pots with confidence.
Who This Class Is For
This class is perfect for anyone brand new to pottery who wants a clear, confidence-building path to throwing their first successful pot. Whether you’ve just bought your first wheel, you’re taking a beginner class and want extra support, or you want a creative hobby you can grow into, this course gives you everything you need to get started without the confusion, frustration, or “am I doing this right?” moments.
