Make a Mathom: Kids Clay Project Series

Make a Mathom: Kids Clay Project Series

Screen time that ends with something in their hands.

Make a Mathom is a clay project series for kids ages 6–13, taught by a real potter. Each project comes with a video lesson and a box of everything your kid needs to make it. They follow along and build it with their own hands. At the end they’ve made something worth keeping.

In the old stories, a mathom is a precious thing kept and treasured because of its story rather than its use. Every project in this series is built to become one. Each box brings a letter from a new character, setting up that project’s adventure. Each finished piece gets its own Mathom Tag that your little will fill out with the story of it's creation, so years from now your kid still knows what they made and when.

No kiln, no wheel, no studio required. Projects use air-dry clay, and the tools are things you can find around the house. Sam Perez, Mathom House Educator, designed every lesson so kids can work at the kitchen table, with a grown-up nearby or right alongside them.

Two ways to make

  • Monthly subscription: a new project arrives each month.
  • Season One bundle: get the whole season at once. That’s the orientation class plus the first three pinch pot projects.

Kits start at $37, with price breaks for multi-learner kits for siblings, friends, or making together.

What’s in the box

  • Air-dry clay (~2 lbs per learner)
  • Acrylic paint set and brush
  • A letter from this project’s character
  • A Mathom Story Card for the finished piece
  • Collectible project sticker
  • Resealable bag to keep leftover clay fresh
  • QR card linking to the video lessons and the Make a Mathom community

How it works

  1. Open the box and read the letter.
  2. Scan the card and watch Sam’s lesson.
  3. Make, let it dry, paint it.
  4. Tag it, keep it, and share it with the community.

Good to know

  • Built for ages 6–13
  • The video lessons are yours to keep forever, so kids can rewatch and remake anytime
  • No kiln or special tools needed

Why your maker will love this kit?

Make a Mathom gives kids more than a project to finish. Every box invites them into a creative world where they can make with their hands, follow a story, and discover what they are capable of creating.

With clear video guidance and materials chosen for young makers, kids can work at their own pace while building practical skills, creative confidence, and a collection of treasures they made themselves.

What's inside the Mathom Makers project box?

Each project box includes the core supplies and story elements your maker needs to begin at home.

Air-dry clay for the featured project

A collectible project sticker

A character letter with the story chapter and project setup

A list of any simple household items to gather

Helpful add-ons: A reusable slab mat makes a great work surface, and sealant helps protect finished pieces once they are completely dry.

How messy is it?

Less than you’d think. Air-dry clay doesn’t need water buckets or a wheel, so it’s mostly a kitchen-table activity. Wet clay wipes off hands and tables with a damp cloth. The acrylic paint is the part that can stain, so put on an old shirt and lay down a placemat or slab mat for painting day.

A creative adventure made easy

A mathom is a treasure: something made, kept, shared, or given with care. Make a Mathom helps kids make treasures of their own—one project, one story chapter, and one creative challenge at a time.

Each box begins with a letter from the world of Mathom House. Kids can read along, gather a few simple items from home, and press play to follow the project step by step. As they build, shape, paint, and personalize their work, they become part of an unfolding story.

There is no “perfect” way to make a Mathom. The goal is to experiment, make choices, try again when something does not go as planned, and feel proud of what their own hands can do.

Meet Your Instructor: Sam Perez

While a lifelong creative, Sam has spent nearly 10 years working with clay. She studied art at North Greenville University, and she’s taught painting and pottery to kids in Greenville classrooms and clay camps for years.

She designed every Make-a-Mathom lesson around a simple belief: kids don’t need fancy tools to make something real. They need clear steps, a little courage, and permission to try again.

On camera, Sam teaches the way a good art teacher does. She’s patient, she’s encouraging, and she’s honest that clay doesn’t always do what you want the first time. She builds each project around tools you already have at home, so your kid spends less time hunting for supplies and more time making.

You'll love working alongside Sam as you work your way through the projects.

What your maker will experience

Each episode invites kids to pause, make, and discover what they can do with their own two hands.

Along the way, they will:

Follow approachable, kid-friendly craft instruction

Learn techniques through hands-on projects

Build patience, problem-solving skills, and creative confidence

Create objects they can keep, display, play with, or give as gifts

Move through the series at a pace that works for them

No prior crafting experience required! Just curiosity and a willingness to make a little room for creativity.
